The House of Lords Constitution Committee has issued a striking warning: the rule of law in the UK is being weakened, and every part of society — from government to businesses to individuals — must play a role in protecting it.

Key concerns highlighted in the report include:
🔹 Rising visible low-level crime and a sense of “nothing happens”
🔹 Pressure on courts and legal aid, reducing real access to justice
🔹 Political attacks on judges and careless rhetoric about the judiciary
🔹 A growing public belief in “one rule for them, another for us”

The message is clear: the rule of law isn’t guaranteed by tradition — it is upheld by culture, conduct, and accountability.

The Committee calls for urgent action:
✔️ Restoring trust in policing
✔️ Reducing court backlogs
✔️ Strengthening public legal education
✔️ Ensuring political leaders respect judicial independence
✔️ Making law clearer, accessible, and properly scrutinised

As someone working closely with the legal sector, I see every day how vital trust, fairness, and accountability are — not only for justice, but for business, communities, and the country’s international reputation.

We all have a stake in defending the line between anarchy and tyranny.
